Residents in Liverpool hoping to see Santa were treated to more than 7,000 as runners dressed as Father Christmas took to the city streets for the annual Santa Dash.
The event saw participants from all over the UK and abroad don the famous red and white outfit to take part in 5km and 1km runs, raising funds for charity .
The 7,000 Santa runners beat the target of 6,8000 set by New York last year but were unable to top the world record set by runners in Los Angles just 18 hours earlier, which saw a total of 7,200 Santa’s complete a 5k race.
Liverpool Event Organiser Alan Rothwell said: "It just amazing to see so many people involved in this most spectacular event. It has grown in popularity since 2004 when just 2,000 Santa’s came from across Merseyside ."
"Considering the cold weather I think we did well to better our previous record but we were beaten by a margin of a few hundred by Los Angeles ."
"However, it is not the record that matters, it is the fact that the entrants had an enjoyable day and that a lot of money was raised for charity ."
The Liverpool event, which raised more than £130,000 for charity, was won by Steven Wilkinson from Crosby who completed the race in just 16 minutes.
